Bill regarding vehicle registration passes Senate

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

I authored legislation regarding vehicle registration, which passed the Senate last week with a unanimous vote.

House Bill (HB) 1082 removes the requirement that the person whose name appears on the vehicle registration must sign it. As the result of the bill, individuals who fail to sign their vehicle registration will no longer be subject to a Class C infraction.

I have spoken with many constituents who were unaware that they were violating the law by not signing their vehicle registration. We worked with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles on this piece of legislation to remove this unnecessary penalty on Hoosier drivers.

HB 1082 will now head to the governor’s desk to be signed into law.

Celebrating Veterans Day 2012

Sunday, November 11th, 2012
Veterans Day is a special day in our nation. November 11th marks the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918. Presently, we honor our courageous servicemen and servicewomen who have given their time, and in some cases their lives, for our great country. It’s important to show our Hoosier support to those who have served to protect our freedom.

There are many ways to show respect and thanks to our veterans. Here are a few ideas:
  • AMillionThanks.org – Write a card, email, letter or prayer of appreciation for our military and they will receive it around a holiday.
  • Operation Gratitude – Your $15 donation pays for the assembly and shipping of a 50+ item care package to be sent to a service person. If you know of someone who has served, you can place them on a list to request that a care package and letters of thanks be sent to them as well.
  • Battalion Buddies – By donating a cuddly stuffed animal to this program, a child of a deployed parent will receive the toy, along with a note of encouragement to comfort them in their parent’s absence.
In the past year, the General Assembly has showed additional support for Hoosier veterans by passing legislation that will help military personnel returning from combat. These men and women will now have a three year window to apply for aid from the Military Family Relief Fund, which will help veterans adjust back to civilian life. Additionally, state educational institutions are now required to award post secondary credit to members of the military enrolled in a state educational institution who successfully complete courses that are part of the individual’s military service.
Thank you for giving us the freedoms we enjoy today.
God Bless America!

Halloween Safety Tips & Treats

Monday, October 29th, 2012

This time of year, neighborhoods begin their transformation from normal landscapes to spooky scenes. Houses decorated with cobwebs and pumpkins remind enthusiastic children that Halloween is fast approaching.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2011 an estimated 41 million children 5-14 years old participated in trick-or-treating. It is imperative to consider some safety tips before participating in any Halloween activities.

Here are some important safety tips to consider before/during trick-or-treating:

  • Make sure you plan a safe route;
  • Make sure that a trusted adult is present and tell your child to never go into a stranger’s home;
  • Make sure that your driveway, porch, front steps and sidewalks are clean of debris such as rocks or leaves;
  • Make sure to consider your pet on Halloween and possibly bringing it inside or crate it for the evening; and
  • Make sure your child knows to keep any Halloween candy away from animals.

The following are trick-or-treat times in our area:

  • Greenwood: Wednesday, Oct. 31, 6-8:30 p.m.
  • New Whiteland: Wednesday, Oct. 31, 6-9 p.m.

There are many ways to have fun on Halloween as long as safety is made a top priority. Happy Halloween!
