Update from the Statehouse

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

I’m excited to be back at the Statehouse and have wasted no time getting to work. House Speaker Brian Bosma recently announced the House Republican Legislative Agenda which focuses on five key areas to strengthen Indiana: preparing kids for their careers, connecting crossroads to communities, equipping our workforce, cutting taxes and stopping burdensome regulations.

I recently met with a group of homeowners in Johnson County to discuss their concerns with homeowners associations. In response to their concerns, I am authoring House Bill 1072 . The purpose of this bill is to provide an easier way to resolve disputes between homeowners and their associations. Additionally, the bill establishes a study committee to further discuss homeowners associations in Indiana, including mediation of disputes. The bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee and is currently awaiting a hearing.

I appreciate your input on this and other pieces of legislation. I invite you to visit my website and take my legislative survey.  Your answers to the questions on this survey will provide me with a better understanding of how to serve you and our community. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent you at the Statehouse, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

untitled

Honoring True American Heroes

Monday, November 11th, 2013
Today, we find ourselves in a place of solemn commemoration. Veterans Day is about remembering and honoring anyone who has worn the uniform to defend this country, fighting to protect the freedom it represents.

Some of our nation’s greatest heroes have given their lives to protect our borders, and without the countless sacrifices made by veterans, America would not be the great nation it is today.
November 11th marks the anniversary of the cease-fire that ended hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany during the First World War. Over the course of history, we continue to witness our veterans answering the call, valiantly defending our nation against those that threaten it.Although we can never fully repay our veterans for the sacrifices they made and continue to make, below is a list of several things you can do to show your appreciation:

  • Write a letter or send a care package to a veteran thanking them for their service. Visit Operation Gratitude for letter writing tips or additional information.
  • Visit or volunteer at a veterans hospital.
  • If you know a veteran, provide a meal or baked goods for them.
  • Teach your kids about serving our country. Visit VA Kids for fun facts and activities.
  • Visit or bring in baked goods to your local VFW. Click here to find a VFW near you.
As a state representative, one way I can show my appreciation for our troops and veterans is by supporting legislation that makes life a little easier for those who have fought to defend the ideals of America.
Another simple thing you can always do and not just on Veterans Day is go out of your way to thank a veteran for their service. It may seem small, but it is the least we can do to show our appreciation to the heroes that gave us the freedoms we enjoy.Thank you for your service and God Bless America!

A Fun and Safe Halloween

Tuesday, October 29th, 2013

Halloween is right around the corner, and kids will soon be trick-or-treating in amusing and “scary” costumes throughout our community. It’s always great to see everyone out and about with their kids, enjoying the autumn weather and getting some sweets!

In preparing for Halloween, there are some important safety precautions to consider to ensure everyone has an enjoyable time.

  • Plan a safe route for trick-or-treating.
  • Trick-or-treat in a group, with a trusted adult, and try to stay on the sidewalk when walking to and from different houses.
  • It’s always a good idea to have some food before trick-or-treating! When they return, be sure to inspect their “goody bags” in case the candy has been tampered with or looks unusual.
  • Costume accessories such as swords, knives, etc. should be short, soft, and flexible to avoid accidents.
  • For homeowners, make sure to consider your pets, possibly bringing them inside or crating them for the evening.
Local trick-or-treating times on Thursday, Oct. 31 are as follows:

  • Greenwood: 6-8:30 p.m.
  • New Whiteland: 6-9 p.m.
  • Whiteland: 6-9 p.m.

I hope everyone has a fun (and safe) Halloween!
