High marks from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce

Saturday, June 29th, 2013

This week, the Indiana Chamber of Commerce released scores for all state legislators based on certain votes cast during the 2013 legislative session. I was humbled to receive a 94% rating from the Chamber for this session bringing my aggregate score to 95%.

The Chamber’s Vote Analysis has been produced for the past 29 years after every legislative session. The legislator’s scores are determined by his or her votes on particular bills and select amendments where the outcome of those bills and amendments on the state’s economy would have an impact on Indiana businesses.

This year, the Chamber graded the entire General Assembly on several bills, including but not limited to the budget, various tax reform bills, the Indiana Career Council, as well as a few bills that would increase opportunities for Hoosiers to access a high quality education.

As a legislator, I am intent on finding ways to improve our state’s attractiveness for people wanting to start a family here and find a rewarding job. Having a lean government that is fiscally responsible lays the foundation for economic success, which is evident in the General Assembly’s work to lower the tax burden facing Hoosiers. Indiana has a regulatory environment that is conducive to business growth and is major factor in our state’s continued prosperity.

I appreciate the Chamber’s recognition of my efforts to make Indiana the best state in the nation to go to school, get a job and raise a family.

Start the School Year Off Right

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Hoosier children are switching gears from summertime activities to the classroom. Starting a new school year can be exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming at times for both the parent and child. Here are a few tips and reminders to help you start the school year off right.

Does your child need immunizations?
Hoosier children, with a few exceptions, are required to be vaccinated against specific infectious diseases. Information on which immunizations your child might need and when they should be administered can be found at www.in.gov/isdh/17094. Also, check out Indiana’s new immunization online tracking system for parents and physicians at myvaxindiana.in.gov.

It’s never too early to start planning for your child’s future success.
Visit www.in.gov/learnmoreindiana and www.in.gov/knowhow2go to find tips and information on items such as:

  • How to have fun while continuing to learn on breaks from school;
  • How to plan for college and their career;
  • How to pay for college; and
  • Resources to explore your child’s interests and goals for the future.

Does your child need help with math or science homework?
Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology offers a free homework hotline for help with math and science homework for students in grades 6 – 12. They offer help Sunday – Thursday from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. (EST) at their toll-free number 1-877-ASK-ROSE (1-877-275-7673). You may also visit their website at www.askrose.org.

Celebrating Indiana’s 195th Birthday

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

State Rep. Woody Burton is encouraging local fourth graders to participate in an essay competition in conjunction with “Indiana Statehood Day,” a celebration of Indiana’s 195th birthday.

The Indiana Statehouse Tour Office is sponsoring the competition. Winners will be honored at the Statehood Day Celebration on Friday, December 9, 2011 from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. EST, at the Indiana Statehouse.

“This is a great occasion for all fourth graders to express why he or she is proud to be a Hoosier.” said Rep. Burton. “It is my hope that all fourth graders will take advantage of this unique opportunity.”

The competition rules are as follows:
• The competition is open to any Indiana fourth grade public, private, or home
school student;
• Essays need to range from 100 to 400 words, handwritten or typed;
• Essays must include student’s name, teacher’s name, and the school’s name,
address and telephone number. Please make sure the school name is on every
essay; and
• Essays should convey: What living in the State of Indiana means to the
student—what are the things that make the student glad that he or she is a
Hoosier?

All essays must be received or postmarked October 28, 2011. A group of selected judges will read through all entries and then choose first, second, and third place winners. The first place winner will be invited to read his or her essay at the ceremony on December 9.

Please send essays to:
